Music Moving the Metro Chart

Following on from their beloved 2017 debut, A Quality of Mercy, Melbourne’s RVG are back with their new single I Used To Love You from their highly anticipated second album, Feral. The track’s lyrics are pretty stark in coming from a desire to move forward, but its sound marks a maturation for the band as they combine the urgency of rock with a softer pop vein filled with feelings of empathy. I Used to Love You hit the top of the Metro Chart this week, just ahead of the latest from A.Swayze & the Ghosts with Mess of Me at number two. Led by their enigmatic frontman, Andrew Swayze, the Hobart four-piece deliver a rollicking punk anthem complete with theatrical build up to a jangly crescendo. It’s a middle finger to unwanted inheritance - the negative traits passed down from mentors, teachers and parents alike.

Leading the Way on the Regional Chart

Michelle Cashman has debuted at number one on the Regional Chart this week with her latest, Guys Like You. The singer-songwriter from the Southern Highlands of NSW maintains a raw, immediate tone backed by big country sounds on this one. It’s encouraging and hopeful with just the right amount of twang to keep your feet stomping. Not far behind, at number seven, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever return for the new decade with Cars In Space. Light, dreamy and brimming with passionate guitar pop sounds, the track is propelled by the chemistry of the Victorian five-piece and adds a curious shine to the act of breaking up.

Beyond the Charts

Milan Ring meticulously curates every aspect of her creative process, from singing and rapping all the way to mixing and mastering. Backing her unique, honest voice with looped beats, sample drops and gorgeous guitar work, her live shows illustrate the sheer breadth of her talent as a solo act. Having spent the last two years in the studio with big names like SZA, The Avalanches and DRAM – Milan Ring returns with her new single, Switch Off, produced in collaboration with Chance The Rapper’s band, The Social Experiment. The track is her debut release on the Astral People Recordings label, and washes over you as a sweet slice of soul-fuelled pop thanks to some beautiful layered vocal harmonies threading the beat together. Milan Ring may not be in the charts this week but we’re sure to be hearing plenty more from her this year.
