Role overview

The Production and Service Manager is responsible for ensuring JOY 94.9 provides quality, inclusive, creative and effective production solutions that fit community and client needs, station formats and complies with the Broadcasting Act and the Community Radio Broadcasting Codes of Practice.

As an experienced leader, you will build, develop and manage a team of Audio Production volunteers and skilled Trainers, sharing your skills and knowledge to empower them to develop their craft.

Working with the CEO and JOY Management Team, you will manage and continue to develop JOY’s product and service revenue streams, including: Production Services (podcasting services and future production ventures) and Training (internal and external).  

In ensuring quality and timely delivery of JOY’s products and services, you will handle post sales management, including delivery of material, post campaign reporting and relationship management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide quality, inclusive, creative and effective production solutions to ensure a seamless on-air sound that meets community and client needs, fits station formats and complies with the Broadcasting Act and the CBAA Code of Practice 
  • Build, Manage and Develop a team of Audio Production volunteers to complete day to day audio production tasks (with the ability to personally step in and produce urgently required audio) 
  • Manage the post-sales process and liaise with clients from contract signing, design and delivery of the product/service (e.g. sponsorship campaigns, production services, training services) to post-delivery reporting
  • Produce tracking and performance reports for internal and external use (e.g. overall spot availability, diversity of voice talent, air check reports, PVD) 
  • Continually develop and manage internal and external training courses and products ensuring learning outcomes are achieved and exceeded where possible
  • Manage, coordinate, and monitor all audio production and traffic management activities including produced and live-read on-air scripts to ensure fit to station formats.
Key Selection Criteria
  • Significant (5 years +) experience in a leadership role managing teams (both paid and voluntary), stakeholders, resources and projects
  • Significant (5 years +) experience in designing, developing and delivering quality broadcast production services in a fast paced work environment
  •  Significant (5 years +) Experience and or qualifications in designing, developing and delivering quality training products
  • An awareness of the needs of the LGBTIQA+ communities and a passion for inclusivity
  • Ability to multitask and coordinate the production of various elements (station sound, sponsorship, CSAs, podcasting) 
  • A passion for vocational training, with an understanding of the needs and capabilities of individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds 
  • Capacity to identify skills gaps, and to devise opportunities for masterclasses and short courses 
  • A finger on the pulse of new and emerging trends in audio production and podcasting 
  • High level multi-tasking, administration, organisational and time management skills 
  • Understanding of the CBAA codes of practice 
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills  
  • Proficient in audio production programs, including Adobe Audition 
  • Advanced Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word skills 
  • Knowledge of Wide Orbit and or similar digital play out systems is an advantage.  
  • Knowledge of Mediasales Traffic and or similar traffic scheduling software is an advantage.

Communication is an important element in devising, disseminating and pursuing the organisational goals for all organisations. It involves informing target audiences about frequent, timely and relevant information. Members were consulted with regard their particular needs; as well as staff who are responsive, knowledgeable and passionate about the organisation. Being very different target groups, we found communication approaches wanted by both groups to differ. We surveyed Australian sporting organisations aiming to examine their communication strategies. Not surprisingly, our findings suggest that many organisations think of communication as an after-thought. We argue that sporting organisations are not making the most the latest communication methods, nor progressing with member’s communication desires or what members are actually seeking. Members want electronic, two-way and fast communication tools including electronic newsletter and bulletin boards. This research opens up debate on how community-based media may value-add to the organisational communication mix, and how digital broadcasting can be developed by the community broadcasting sector to enhance the communications capabilities for the not for profit sector.


Recognising the historical partnership between the community broadcasting and higher education sectors, this paper reviews the pioneer educational program Talking to New England as collaboration between the University of New England and 2SER. It also documents the contributions to learning and teaching at Charles Sturt University (CSU) over three decades by 2MCE and evaluates the potential contributions of the station to the development of new teaching resources such as educational podcasting. This paper also outlines a pilot project at CSU established to investigate whether the “explaining voice” as a style of vocal presentation closely aligned to radio broadcasting traditions, could be adopted for university audio learning.
