Consultation on digital radio channel planning for Hobart, Canberra, Darwin and the Gold Coast

Helen Henry, 21st December 2016

Following the announcement of digital radio extension beyond the five capital cities, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has outlined the general approach and planning principles for regional Australia.

The ACMA has proposed specific digital radio channel plans for Hobart, Canberra, Darwin, together with the Gold Coast and a revision of the current Brisbane digital radio channel plan. Read the ACMA's announcement and access the channel plans for more information.

As a member of the Digital Radio Planning Committee for Regional Australia, the CBAA welcomes the extension of digital radio and will continue active involvement in the planning process generally and specifically in relation to the community radio sector:

“The move to establish permanent digital radio services outside the existing 5 capital cities is a fantastic development. We look forward to continued participation to ensure that channel planning supports community broadcasters as a key pillar in broadcasting in Hobart, Canberra, Darwin and the Gold Coast. With a national listenership that is higher than ever, it is an exciting time for our growing and diverse sector, and we look forward to the ongoing development of free-to-air digital radio,” said CBAA Chief Executive Officer Jon Bisset.

Community broadcasting contributes to and reflects our open society, strong democracy and vibrant culture through services which provide unique local content and a diverse mix of cultural and specialist programs including educational, music, Indigenous, print handicapped, youth, seniors, religious and ethnic language and multicultural services. For over 40 years, Australian Governments have been committed to community radio standing alongside commercial and national networks on the available technology as part of a primary set of media services freely accessible to the public. The CBAA will continue to work with all political parties to ensure this support is maintained in the future.

Community broadcasters with comments or questions on digital radio planning are encouraged to contact the CBAA’s Digital Radio Project on 02 9310 2999.
