Give to Gain – Celebrating International Women’s Day on the Community Radio Network
This Sunday 8 March is International Women’s Day, giving us a chance to reflect on the important role that community radio plays in amplifying the voices of women and gender diverse people worldwide. The theme Give to Gain is particularly fitting for community radio, which is built on the contributions of volunteers from across the country.
We caught up with the producers behind some hit shows available on the Community Radio Network to find out how they’re marking the day.

Earth Matters (3CR)

As with all other areas of Direct Activism for social and environmental justice, some of the most staunch, courageous and passionate forest defenders are women. At the Lutruwita Forest Resistance Tour last month Hannah and Rosie were fortunate to meet and work alongside many of them, who ranged from teenagers to 80-year-olds. They spoke to two of these incredible women - Jenny Weber (BBF Campaign Manager), and Colette Harmsen (scientist and veterinarian), and look forward to introducing them to listeners on Earth Matters' International Women's Day program.

The upcoming special IWD edition of The Folk Show will focus solely on female artists.

Producer/host Maggie Morgan says, “On March 8th, we mark International Women’s Day 2026 guided by this year’s theme, “Give to Gain.” Toward this, my program Meet Me At The Movies recognises the strength, sacrifice and leadership of women throughout history — women who gave their voices, their courage and their vision so that future generations could gain greater equality and opportunity.

The Narratives Library asks authors to read from their own work and dive more deeply into their work with host Karena Wynn-Moylan. In this special edition, Suzie Miller reads from her novel 'Prima Facie' and then discusses how she realised after it became a smash hit play she could change things for the better for women through Art rather than being a lawyer. Tracey Spicer left briefly to have a baby and returned to find herself demoted. Undaunted, she challenged her bosses over the inequity.

Vision Australia Hour (Vision Australia Radio)

In a special IWD episode, Lizzie Eastham from VA’s Studio 1 interviews founder and creative overlord of By Ninja, focusing on the studio’s work in inclusive and accessible design. We will be discussing their collaboration with Wilde by Oscar to create accessible haircare packaging designed to better support people who are blind or have low vision. The conversation will explore how accessibility was incorporated into a luxury haircare product, the challenges of introducing inclusive design within the beauty industry, and the broader implications for independence, dignity, and equity for women living with blindness or low vision. The interview will also feature Narelle Gattie, a woman living with low vision who works in the accessibility and advocacy space. Narelle acted as a consultant on the project, sharing lived experiences and insights that helped shape the outcomes of the design. Her perspective will highlight the importance of including people with disability in the design process and ensuring accessibility is informed by real-world use. This episode strongly aligns with the Balancing the Scales theme by showcasing women-led work in design, advocacy while also examining how inclusive practices can address long-standing inequities faced by people with disability.

Reproductive Slavery

Roberts traces that history forward to government "social services" taking black children from their families in the current era, and further, to the Supreme Court Dobbs decision allowing outlawing of abortion, alleging a "shortage of babies for adoption."
