What is Digital Radio?
Digital radio sits alongside AM and FM as an increasingly popular free-to-air broadcast platform. In Australia we use the DAB+ standard for digital radio broadcasting. Digital radio offers opportunities for improved sound quality, service expansion and text and visual content.
What is CBAA's Role in the Rollout?
The CBAA oversees the operation of DAB+ services Australia wide, where it is available. We provide coordinated access to digital transmission, alongside offering advocacy to further rollout of community services on the platform. We also support stations utilising DAB+ to minimise downtime, maintain quality service delivery and maintain metadata and electronic program grids.
What is the Cost?
Federal Government targeted funding supports affordable access to the free-to-air digital platform for community broadcasters.
Where is DAB+ Available?
There are currently 63 full-time DAB+ services broadcasting via 54 community radio licensees in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Darwin, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney and the Gold Coast. Services in these locations reach approximately 70% of the Australian population. DAB+ trials are also on-air with permanent implementation prioritised for multiple further locations.
