CBAA's Submission re Communications Legislation Amendment (Combatting Misinformation and Disinformation) Bill 2024

01-10-2024 15:36

In this submission to the Parliamentary Committee reviewing this Bill, the CBAA raised concerns that the Community Radio Broadcasting Codes of Practice are not specifically mentioned in a provision that exempts trusted media from new legislation aimed at digital platforms like Google and Meta.
The Bill, which addresses the proliferation of online disinformation and misinformation, sets up a new framework for digital platforms Codes to be overseen by the Australian Media and Communications Authority.
The CBAA argues that the media exemption provision, which is intended to protect the independence of Australian media organisations, is confusing as currently drafted and could lead to community broadcasting content being removed by digital platforms, which goes against the rationale for the Bill.  We have asked for our Codes to be specifically mentioned in the media exemption.
