Deutsche Welle (DW), Germany’s international broadcaster, is excited to advertise this year’s paid DW/CBAA Mike Thompson/Clare Atkinson internships for multimedia journalists.

The successful applicant will work in our multimedia newsroom in Bonn, Germany. They will begin with a six-month paid internship, which may lead to a longer contract or freelance work at DW.

DW will pay one return airfare from Australia to Germany and will help with the paperwork and finding accommodation if needed. The monthly payment of 2010 Euros will allow a student lifestyle in Bonn, right in the center of Europe.

Interns will start in our English language online newsroom. If everything works out well for both sides, DW may organize further experiences at different DW departments.

The internship will begin in June 2024.

Interns’ tasks in the newsroom include:

  • identifying relevant world news developments for coverage on dw.com
  • speed writing of news articles for the internet based on news agency material and social media content
  • producing news content and headlines in accordance with Search Engine Optimization requirements
  • understanding of criteria for distribution of content via social media
  • production of videos for distribution across multiple social media platforms
  • posting content to relevant social media platforms and community management
  • copy editing English language news articles for publication
  • providing input for in-depth reporting and field reporter stories
  • production of multimedia content: audio and video production and editing, developing infographics

Requirements:

  • native level of English
  • good German language skills
  • university degree
  • commitment to community broadcasting
  • experience working in a newsroom with a high content turnover and time pressure
  • work experience in print/online newswriting
  • Solid understanding of digital media, particularly in the field of social media and video production
  • sound knowledge of international politics, especially European issues
  • solid understanding of international media and how to cover stories for a global audience
  • good technical foundation for learning to deal with browser-based journalism tools and content management systems
  • ability and willingness to work night shifts
  • creativity and initiative
  • ability to work in a team
