We're just about to upgrade our production studio and I was wondering on peoples opinions on a few things:

Firstly:

What kind of mixers have people had good experiences with for radio production purposes? We've been using a Mackie for a while, but I think it's someone elses and they want it back... lol.. damn!

Secondly:

SOUNDCARDS!! What soundcards have people had good experience with?
I've been looking at a few Melbourne based places (Soundcorp is one) and have found the Presonus Firebox for $500.. anybody had any experience with it?

Yes the MG series are highly regarded.

Also worth a look is the Soundcraft MPM 12/2 units

VERY nice, and rack mountable for OB use.

M-audio is good value for money, then you would have to buy editing software as well. The other option you have for a production studio is to buy a ProTools LE system that come with a decent audio interface starting at $499. This will give your volunteers training on an industry standard editing platform. The interface has mic preamps built in. The Yamaha MG series of mixers are about the best quality small format mixers out there for the price.

Thanks guys! I've got a few quotes on some different bits and pieces - once i'm done with it (could take a while considering studying and work and girlfriend and friends as well), i'll put some pictures up!

I have an old Yamaha MC1204 and a Tapco (ie Mackie) little mixer for field work. Would not really recommend either for broadcast studio work. YMMV!

The M-Audio range is good. A lot of people use their Audiophile 2496

I have an old Delta 44

which allows me to feed four group outs from the MC1204 or the Yamaha MD4 (4 track minidisc) direct to a PC for further editing.

Cheers
John
