Reduced Defamation Insurance

DEFAMATION INSURACE – Yes you do need it

Risk management of your defamation exposure is very important – but will not always protect you from claims even though you may not have broken any law.

Defamation insurance is an effective tool to transfer most of the risk from claims to an insurer. For many years the CBAA has negotiated a favourable scheme for defamation insurance through Aon Professional Risks.

What It Covers

  • Libel or slander by reason of words written or spoken or by audible or visual material published, broadcast or telecast by the insured in the conduct of Profesional Business Practice
  • Infringement or copyright, trademarks, registered designs or patents or any plagiarism.
  • Negligent advice, mistake, misprint or erroneous matter or material contained in any of the insured's publications, broadcasts or telecasts.
  • Any error or omission, misstatement, misleading statement or misinterpretation or advice or information published, broadcast or telecast in the promotion or conduct of the professional business practice but without expectation of other reward
  • Any invasion of privacy, improper disclosure or sensitive private facts and improper appropriation of name likeness or identity
  • The policy period is from 31 March to 31 March each year

Who has it helped

  • The policy has been invoked by 19 members
  • The policy has responded to 37 claims
  • Insurers have paid out over $280, 000 in legal costs and damages

How much is the policy

CBAA brokered group discount provides $1 million cover. Excess: $1000.
  • Members with gross income less than $300,000 and no claims history pay $1100pa.
  • Others are rated individually.

Public Liability Insurance
  • CBAA brokered group discount.
  • The Policy is specifically extended to include Volunteers, wherein many of the off the shelf policies don't. Premiums commence, for a Limit of Indemnity of $10,000,000, at $650 plus charges for a Community Broadcasting Station with up to 200 volunteers, conducting 5 outside broadcasts per year.
  • (Plus GST and State Government Charges as applicable).

Property Insurance
  • CBAA brokered group discount.
  • This highly competitive policy is specifically designed for Community Broadcasters including Contents, Computers, Broadcasting Equipment and Transmission Sites. As an example of rates, to insure $30,000 worth of property commences at $185 and the premium for Burglary commences, with a sum insured of $5,000, is $132.
  • (Plus GST and State Govt Charges as applic).

Volunteer Insurance
  • CBAA brokered group discount.
  • Voluntary insurance provides benefits should a volunteer have an accident or be injured whilst carrying out work on behalf of the CBAA station. The annual minimum premium per policy is $130 and covers all volunteers with no age exclusions - many standard policies cover only age 18 to 65, which will cover up to approximately 25 volunteers.
  • (plus GST and State Govt Charges as applic).
