Send your program to a national audience

CRN is happy to receive applications from community radio program makers whose programs have the potential to go nationwide. We get a lot of submissions, so here are some tips on how to make the most of your opportunity.

Before you submit a program to CRN, discuss the idea with the program coordinator or committee at your station. Get their feedback and advice. Is the program as good as it could be? Will it work for a national audience? If not, what adaptations will it need? Will you be able to provide programs every week without fail?

Phone CRN staff to talk about your idea. We can provide feedback on the angle you are going to take. Your program will have much more chance of finding a home on the CRN program grid if it’s offering something different.

We’re always guided by the Codes of Practice, which are reflected in CRN policy. As such, we’re looking for innovative content that:

  • Expands the diversity of viewpoints and programming choices available, especially those underrepresented in the media.
  • Promotes an inclusive and culturally diverse Australia.
  • Supports Australian arts, music and culture.
  • Provides a voice for views underrepresented in the mainstream media.

DO send in a fully-fledged pilot for a national audience.

DON’T send something cut from the station’s logger. We need to know that you can produce a show that doesn’t contain time calls, local weather, traffic references, and is of broadcast standard. CRN programs are rebroadcast by stations all over the country at different times.

You will also need to provide a letter of support from your station program coordinator (or similar).

SPECIALS: Call CRN directly (02 9310 2999) to discuss your idea. It may be a live feed from a festival, a conference, an innovative performance special, a pre-recorded documentary or series of short drop-ins, or feature interview. Whatever it is, we'll have to look at what we can do, given our resources and airtime available. Funding may be available from the Community Broadcasting Foundation.

For programs with commercial content or major sponsors, you will need to discuss these issues. Please call the CRN on (02) 9310 2999 or email crn@cbaa.org.au.

Funding may be possible to assist with the production of your program. Visit the Community Broadcasting Foundation for more information.
